Mexican Revolution Day & the Birth of the Soldaderas

Embracing Courage and Change: The Story of the Soldaderas on Mexican Revolution Day

November 17 marks Mexican Revolution Day , a turning point in history that reshaped Mexico and gave rise to one of the most powerful symbols of courage and resistance: the Soldaderas.

At Soldadera Coffee, this day holds deep meaning. Our name, our inspiration, and our purpose all come from the bravery of these women who fought not for glory, but for survival, dignity, and justice.

A Nation in Upheaval

In the early 1900s, Mexico was cracking under the weight of inequality, poverty, and the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. Land was stolen, workers were exploited, and the voice of the everyday Mexican was silenced.

But in the quiet corners of mercados, kitchens, and train stations… whispers of resistance began. People were ready to reclaim their freedom.

When the Revolution ignited in 1910, chaos followed. Families were displaced. Towns were ravaged. Hope and terror lived side by side.

And in the middle of it all, another revolution was born a revolution of women.

The Rise of the Soldaderas: Women Who Carried a Nation

The Soldaderas, sometimes called Adelitas, were the heart of the Mexican Revolution. They were wives, daughters, sisters many with no military background who stepped into danger with unimaginable courage.

They cooked, healed, strategized, gathered intelligence, carried supplies, and in many cases… fought on the front lines.

They defied the gender roles of their time. They protected their families. They kept entire battalions alive. They were the first women soldiers of Mexico, and their strength still echoes today.

How Soldaderas Inspired Our Brand

Just as the Soldaderas brewed coffee over campfires to energize soldiers, our brand carries that same spirit — bold, resilient, and deeply rooted in heritage.

Our Café de Olla and Canelita blends honor the flavors these women would brew in ollas de barro (clay pots) using cinnamon, spices, and love, a recipe passed down through generations, including our own abuelita Cristina, the soul of Soldadera Coffee.

When you drink Soldadera, you’re not just enjoying cold brew. You’re tasting a piece of history and  the bravery of women who fought for a better world.

Why This Day Matters Today

Mexican Revolution Day is a reminder that:

Women have always been leaders, long before they were recognized.

Heritage matters, and preserving these stories keeps culture alive.

Courage survives through community, through memory, and yes… even through a simple cup of coffee.

We honor the Soldaderas not as relics of the past, but as symbols of today, women who fight inequality, protect communities, and stand fearless in the face of challenges.

And that is the spirit behind every can of Soldadera Coffee.
