Las Posadas: A Journey of Light, Community, and Celebration in Mexico

A holiday tradition that shapes who we are and how we gather.

Every December, across towns, cities, ranchos, and neighborhoods in Mexico, families prepare for one of the most cherished celebrations of the season: Las Posadas. More than just a countdown to Christmas, Las Posadas are a nine-day journey of music, prayer, food, community, and memory. Basically, Las Posadas are a living tradition that honors both faith and culture.

For many of us Mexicans, these nights are woven into our childhoods: walking with candles beside our parents, breaking a star-shaped piñata with cousins, smelling cinnamon and tejocote (apple-like fruit) rising from a pot of warm ponche (mulled-like cider with tropical fruit), and hearing the echo of posada songs floating down the street. These are the traditions that stay with us — and the traditions that inspire flavors like Canelita, infused with cinnamon and a sense of nostalgia.

What Are Las Posadas?

Las Posadas take place from December 16 to December 24. The word posada means “inn,” and the celebration reenacts Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem as they search for shelter. Each night represents one month of Mary’s pregnancy, leading to the birth of Jesus on Christmas Eve.

But beyond the religious meaning, Las Posadas carry a deeper cultural spirit — one of hospitality, perseverance, family, and the joy of gathering with community.

The tradition blends Catholic roots with Indigenous customs, creating something unmistakably Mexican: vibrant, flavorful, heartfelt, and full of life.

This winter season at Soldadera, until December 24th, we will be exploring posadas and their deep meaning and roots in our community. Follow our posts for great stories, freebies, discounts, and so much more.
