A Revolution that changed Mexico

Today, the 20th of November, marks the anniversary which sparked the beginning of the Mexican Revolution after 30 years of dictatorship under Porfirio Diaz in 1910. On this day, Mexicans remember and celebrate the revolution that lasted 10 years. The Mexican Revolution gave way to equality for all Mexicans, broke down elite classes, stopped the exploitation of natural and humans resources and basic human liberties.

Women’s Presence

The women soldiers’ (also known as “Adelitas”) participation in the revolution helped transform peasant life, and was one of the greatest phenomenon in the Mexican Revolution. Soldaderas became a fundamental aid to the insurgence for change in the revolution. Unfortunately, it wasn't until 1939 when the Soldaderas were recognized for their valor and commemorated.

How Mexico Changed

Here is a list of a few accomplishments resulting from the Mexican Revolution

Development of a permanent democratic form of government
Implementation of the 8 hour work week
The right to protest
Reparations for land taken away from farmers, from corporations that took them away
Lowest Class began to be incorporated in the Mexican society as equal members

How it's Celebrated today

This annual national holiday is celebrated typically with regional dances, mariachis, and classic school parades. Workers typically have the day off from work.
