Mexico’s traditions are rich in symbolism, and Las Posadas are filled with meaningful elements that pass wisdom from one generation to the next.
The Seven-Point Star Piñata
This is perhaps the most iconic symbol of Las Posadas. The seven points represent the seven deadly sins. These sins are pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. Breaking the piñata while blindfolded symbolizes faith conquering hardship, releasing blessings (candy and fruit) for all.
Candles and Luminarias
These lights guide the procession through the night, symbolizing hope and illumination, and the belief that even in darkness, light will always find a way through.
Posada Songs
The traditional verses recreate Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter, capturing the heart of the story and uniting everyone in a shared moment of history.
El Nacimiento (The Nativity Scene)
More than decoration, the Nativity represents the destination of the journey, the moment when hospitality becomes a miracle, and tradition becomes memory.
Aguinaldos
At the end of the night, children receive small gift bags filled with fruit, candies, peanuts, or cookies. These aren’t just treats they’re blessings.
