This past Saturday, Aug. 3, marked the kickoff of the 13th Annual Muskegon River Trash Bash, an event that spans an entire month, bringing our community together to protect and preserve the Muskegon River and its surrounding areas.
Partnering with the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly (MRWA) and the Newaygo Conservation District, Soldadera Coffee was thrilled to energize this family-friendly cleanup effort, reminiscent of the dedication shown by the Soldaderas of 1910.
Kickstarting the Cleanup
From 8 AM to 12 PM, volunteers of all ages gathered with a shared goal: to clean up the beautiful Muskegon River. Armed with gloves, bags, and a hearty dose of community spirit, they set out to make a difference. To keep everyone fueled for the task, Soldadera Coffee distributed cans of our invigorating cold brew. Just as the Soldaderas fueled soldiers with their iconic Café de Olla during the Mexican Revolution, we were there to provide the energy needed to tackle the day's challenges.
The Results
The dedication and hard work of the volunteers yielded impressive results:
- 1808 beverage containers
- 5 tires
- 28 flip flops
- 6 tubes
- 14 vapes
- Approximately 100 lbs of steel
- Close to 300 lbs of general trash
Special thanks go out to Paul Haan and his team from the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly, as well as Luke Cotton from the Newaygo Conservation District. Their leadership and coordination made this event a resounding success, and the river is now cleaner than it's ever been.
